Nutrition for Visible Abs: What Actually Matters

Visible abs require a lower body-fat level than most people carry, and the only reliable road there is a modest calorie deficit — roughly 300 to 500 calories below maintenance — held for months, not days. Crash diets burn muscle along with fat and usually end in a rebound. Slow and boring wins because you can actually stay on it.

In a deficit, protein is what keeps the muscle you have while fat comes off. Aim for a palm-and-a-half of protein at each meal — eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, beans or lentils — and you will cover most targets without weighing anything. Protein also keeps you fuller than the same calories of carbs or fat, which makes the deficit livable.

Liquid calories (sodas, juices, sweet coffee drinks) add up invisibly. Weekend eating quietly erases weekday deficits. And alcohol both adds calories and wrecks the sleep that fat loss depends on. You do not need perfection — you need your average week to be in a small deficit, most weeks, for a season.
