Get your last 12 months of usage from your utility bill before talking to anyone — that number drives every honest quote.

Payback period = (system cost after incentives) divided by (yearly bill savings). Many US homeowners land between 6 and 12 years; panels are typically warranted for 25. Buying outright (cash or loan) almost always beats leasing or PPAs on lifetime value, though loans vary — read the dealer fees baked into solar loans, which can add thousands. What production do you guarantee in writing, and what if it underperforms? Who handles permits, inspections and the utility interconnection? What do panel, inverter and workmanship warranties cover, separately? A reputable installer answers all of these in the contract, not in conversation.
