Dogs trained with positive reinforcement show better learning outcomes, less fear and anxiety, stronger human-dog bonds, and more reliable behavior in novel situations. Punishment-based training can suppress behaviors in the short term but doesn’t teach the dog what TO do, and it damages trust and creates anxiety. The data is clear.

Every dog should learn five basic commands before anything else: Sit (the gateway behavior for all training), Stay (impulse control and safety), Come/Recall (potentially life-saving), Down (calmness training and management), and Leave It (prevents dangerous ingestion and theft). Master these in this order, in low-distraction environments first, then gradually increase the difficulty of the environment. A dog that reliably performs all five in varied environments is a well-trained dog by any standard.

Timing is the most important technical skill in dog training. The reward must come within 1–2 seconds of the desired behavior — otherwise the dog doesn’t make the connection. A clicker (or verbal marker like ‘Yes!’) bridges the gap between behavior and reward, allowing precise marking of correct behaviors. Reward variety — food treats, toys, praise, access to activities — keeps training engaging. High-value treats (small pieces of chicken, cheese, or commercial high-value treats) are reserved for challenging training; lower-value rewards suffice for known behaviors.

The canine socialization window — 3 to 14 weeks of age — is when puppies most easily and permanently learn that new experiences, people, and other animals are safe. Inadequate socialization during this period produces fearful, reactive adult dogs. Proper socialization means positive, controlled exposure to diverse people, surfaces, sounds, environments, and other animals. Puppy classes are valuable not for the training but for the socialization opportunity. If you’ve adopted an older dog, rehabilitation is possible but requires patience and often professional help.

You don’t need to be a professional dog trainer.
