It’s maintenance and communication, not spite — which is why punishment and declawing (an amputation that’s banned in many places) are the wrong answers. The goal is redirection: make the right scratching spot irresistible and the couch boring.

Cats scratch most right after waking and near the things they already target. Put a tall, sturdy sisal post — tall enough for a full vertical stretch, stable enough not to wobble — directly beside the couch corner they love. A wobbly post teaches the cat that the couch is the better tool. Rub catnip or a pheromone spray on the post, reward every use, and cover the couch corner temporarily with a throw or double-sided tape made for furniture.

Trimming the sharp tips of your cat’s claws every week or two (or asking your vet or groomer to) reduces damage while training takes hold. Soft nail caps are another temporary option for some cats.
